Dear comrades,
We read with great interest that you are planning on launching the ‘Revolutionary Communist Party’ at a founding congress in May.
We agree with you that there is a “giant political vacuum that exists in Britain” – on the left in particular: We see one organisation after another being formed on rather tame, reformist programmes, when instead there is a clear and desperate need to fight openly for the politics of communism and Marxism.
As one of the organisations involved in running the Zoom education series ‘Why Marx?’, we have been discussing exactly those issues for the last 12 months: what kind of party should communists be forming? What should the programme look like? How should debates and disagreements be handled?
There is clearly a need for communist unity and we believe it is of utmost necessity that communists are organised together, in an democratic, multi-tendency organisation that allows differences to be openly discussed and debated (not just in Britain, of course, but we need to start where we live). Some of examples to follow for us in this respect are particularly the Bolshevik Party and the Communist Party of Great Britain in the early 1920s.
In those organisations, open factional battles were routine and the Iskra newspaper carried many discussions and debates between different factions and tendencies. A real party of the working class must be able to embrace different political viewpoints and members should learn to flourish intellectually and to become confident enough to raise any questions or criticisms they may have.
If that is indeed what you are planning, it would be of great service to the workers’ movement in Britain and beyond and we would be very interested in getting involved. Can you please send us more details about how you envisage this process to develop and which groups and organisations you are inviting to participate in the founding conference?
We hope to hear back from you soon.
